LA MODE DESSINE L'ESPOIR -
2004EDITION

"La Mode Dessine l'Espoir" is a cultural project organized around the Ithemba Lightbulb by the association "Dessine l'Espoir" for Wolrd Aids Day next December.

PRINCIPLE

"Fashion designing hope" could be the translation for the cultural
event asking a selection of well-known fashion designers to draw a personalized lightbulb.
Drawings are then interpreted by women living with HIV/AIDS in then townships
surrownding Cape Town in South-Africa, prototypes beeing validated by their author...

Signed drawings and prototypes will be auctioned to raise money for the association
"Dessine l'Espoir' by Remy Le Fur, a well-known parisian auctioneer.

Small series of each light bulb prototype will then be produced by the women involved in the project, and distributed in an international network of shops and department stores, with a donation of 6 euros included in the price of each bulb for the association.

OBJECTIVES

- Making the light bulbs has become an important income generating activity
for approximatly 30 South-African women.
They earn two to three times the avarage salary in the townships, with an artistic
and less time and stress-consuming activity, which is so important when you are living
with HIV/AIDS.
The event will garrantee months of work for them, and allow the training of newcomers.
More than 30000 lightbulbs have been produced up to now.
- Aside from that, funds raised by the association finance the program:
"Espoir pour les townships".

This program is detailed in the attached news letter (> Download PDF newsletter)
It includes:
- the training of women living with HIV/AIDS as counsellors by the Desmund Tutu HIV Fundation.
Counsellors are community members providing individual care at the clinic and at the patient’s home. They co-ordinate weekly treatment readiness workshops and manage education sessions for patients taking Anti-retroviral treatments.
(This activity will also generate annual incomes for 10 otheer women)

- Funding of 20 anti-retroviral treatments (for one year) at the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre,
in anticipation of the government funding.

- participation in the opening of a secure facility in a newly developped township, and financing of transportation expenses for monthly meetings and visits in hospitals for the women.

NEW EDITION, NEW DESIGNERS.

In order to guaranty the durability of the income generating project for the women,
and extend the "Espoir pour les Townships" program to more people, Ithemba and Dessine L'Espoir decided to renew the project with a new collection of lightbulbs, imagined by new designers.

A large number of drawing are still being prepared by the "maisons de couture",
but we already have some important confirmations:
- Jean Paul Gaultier was the first one this year with a reproduction of his famouis Tatoo on a lightbulb.

- Rochas, Givenchy, Atsuro Tayama, are preparing their models.

- The Council of Fashion of America NY has also been presenting the project to american designer, and the 2004 edition will be introduced in NY this year.

- A few models that were not available to the public last year will also be available this year, such as Jean Charles de Castelbajac, Sonia Rykiel, Marithé & François Girbaud.
Several designers have also renewed their participation with new designs
(Nina Ricci, Maurizio Galante, Stella Cadente, Paco Rabanne...).

"COLLECTORS"

Last year edition has been a real succes leading to shortage of bulbs within a few days...
2003's bulbs have become "collectors" and the public is waiting impatiently for the new models to enlarge their personal collection.
